London 2012 Opportunities

On 6 July 2005, International Olympic
Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge, announced that London will
host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It will be the first
time the Olympics have been held in Britain since 1948.
Prior to this in June 2005 the West Midlands Regional Assembly (WMRA)
commissioned Richard Callicott of Reddenhill Consulting to undertake
a report to identify and understand the implications for the West
Midlands of a successful bid from London or from Paris to host the
2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.
This report identified Coventry & Warwickshire as a potential
cluster and world class location for hosting training and holding
camps for visiting teams and countries in the lead up to 2012 and
the immediate weeks before the games begin.
As a result towards the end of 2005, a Coventry & Warwickshire
Management Group was established to co-ordinate 2012 activity and to
develop a clearer understanding of the opportunities, benefits and
costs involved in maximising any opportunities arising out of the
2012 Games across sport, business and tourism.
Funded by Coventry City Council, Warwickshire County Council, CV One
and the Coventry and Warwick Chamber of Commerce, the partnership
also comprises the University of Warwick, Coventry University and
Warwickshire College and in February 2006, a full time Opportunities
Co-ordinator was appointed to drive forward the sub-regional 2012
agenda and maximise 2012 opportunities for Coventry and
Warwickshire.
