Nearly 40,000 people get active for One Big Thing
One Big Thing has been a huge success with more than 38,000 people in Coventry taking part in last Wednesday’s event by doing something to get move active.
Coventry is the first city to record tens of thousands being active in one day.
People all across the city united on Wednesday (21 October) as they joined in on a variety of activities, from entire schools pledging to do “wake and shake” activities to individuals pledging to use the stairs at work instead of the lift.
Naomi Brook, Lifestyles Project Manager at Coventry City Council, which helped to organised the One Big Thing, said: "One Big Thing was all about creating a united, health and energetic city. It was about getting people to do something active that they perhaps wouldn't normally do, no matter how long they did it for or what it was."
"Our aim was to get 10% of the city (32,000 people) being active at once and we're really pleased that we've actually exceeded our target!"
Even shoppers and workers in the city centre were invited to take part as a main event took place in Broadgate, where the Coventry Sports Foundation were running a variety of activities for passers-by to take part in. People were able to pedal on bikes, try their hand at netball and basketball shoot-outs or test their skill in a football penalty contest. Tilly the Tiger was also present to entertain and join in the fun.
ClIr Kamran Caan, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Services, said: "This is a great event and I'm delighted that so many people got involved and took part in the day."
"There were so many activities going on across the city that there was something for everyone and a chance for people to give it a go and try something new, hopefully find new activity that they like doing and can do on a regular basis to stay active."
Some of the activities that people took part in included Zumba, Nordic walking, Laser Quest, paintballing, a lunchtime disco and guided walks.
