Unmissable Tour

Creating Unmissable Coaching Sessions

Coaches are critical to the success of any youth sports session. In order to help create unmissable coaching sessions, sports coach UK and Sport England, have created a short animation and accompanying support guide for coaches to generate ideas for their sessions.
The unmissable session animation recognises that young people are not all the same and want experiences that are tailored to them – coaches need to understand their motivations, their likes, dislikes, hopes and dreams if they are to offer sessions young people want to return to.
Research has found that behaviour can vary from month to month, even week to week rather than always be the same and a positive experience for one young person might be very different to another. This series aims to help coaches see that young people are seeking meaningful experiences and need a reason to come back next week.

CSW Sport Unmissable Tour

CSW Sport are on tour visiting selected satellite clubs across Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire to see the great work going on and to offer any tips and ideas that we gather along the way. We want to help make your sessions unmissable, recent research shows the following principles are key to creating a meaningful experience:

  1. Personalised
  2. Inspiring
  3. Creative
  4. Social
  5. Interactive
  6. Rewarding

Sharing Good Practice

Here is how some of our Satellite Club incorporated the 6 Unmissable Principles into their sessions:

Pink Panthers American Football
Use music in sessions
Have social nights i.e. pizza nights
Go on team trips

Atherstone Adders Hockey
Young people are invited to club socials
Young people self officiate games

Coventry Empire Free G

Music is played in sessions

Rugby Phoenix Volleyball
Have integrated their Satellite Club into their Hub Club via the website and also running the club training straight after the Satellite Club session so the participants can meet the club players. https://rugbyphoenixvolleyballclub.wordpress.com/juniors/

This Girl Can Squash It-Kenilworth Squash Club
Sessions structured based on what their women want
The majority of the session is game play allowing participants to play against one another
Women were invited along to the clubs curry nights to help integrate them into the club

Areas for improvements

From the Satellite Clubs we have visited so far, common themes for improvement are:

  1. Involve young people in the sessions, allow them to shape session and take ownership
  2. Create more relaxed informal session allowing participants free time and play music in background
  3. Become more social- use social media to promote sessions and get participants to engage with one another outside of the session etc. Run social nights
  4. Reward participants for attendance, development etc
